Agouti Care

Caring for an agouti requires attention to its natural habits and environmental needs, as these animals thrive best when their care mimics their wild lifestyle. Agoutis are active, diurnal rodents that need plenty of space to move around, so a large enclosure is essential. The enclosure should be enriched with branches, logs, and hiding spots to allow the agouti to exercise, explore, and feel secure. Since they are excellent climbers and jumpers, providing vertical space and opportunities for climbing is beneficial.

Diet is another critical aspect of agouti care. In the wild, agoutis primarily feed on fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetation. In captivity, their diet should consist of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with nuts, seeds, and a source of protein, such as small insects. Fresh water should always be available. Social interaction and mental stimulation are also important; agoutis can be quite social with their keepers if they are regularly handled from a young age. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended to ensure the agouti remains in good health, and care should be taken to monitor their teeth, as like all rodents, their teeth continuously grow and may require regular maintenance.
