Budgie cage setup

Setting up a proper cage for your budgie is essential for their comfort, well-being, and overall happiness. The cage should be spacious enough for your bird to spread its wings and move around comfortably. A minimum size of 18x18x18 inches is recommended for one budgie, but bigger is always better. The bars of the cage should be spaced no more than half an inch apart to prevent the bird from escaping or getting stuck. Place the cage in a quiet area, away from direct sunlight, drafts, and extreme temperatures, as budgies are sensitive to sudden changes in their environment.

Inside the cage, provide several perches of different diameters and materials to keep your budgie’s feet healthy and prevent issues like bumblefoot. Natural wood perches are ideal, as they offer varying textures that mimic the bird’s natural environment. Toys are also important for mental stimulation, so include a variety of toys like bells, mirrors, and chewable items. However, rotate the toys regularly to keep your budgie engaged. Food and water dishes should be placed high enough to avoid contamination from droppings but still be easily accessible. Additionally, a cuttlebone or mineral block can be added to provide essential nutrients, especially calcium. Keep the cage clean by regularly changing the paper at the bottom and washing the dishes and perches weekly. A well-organized cage will help your budgie feel secure, stimulated, and healthy.
