Cat Breeds for Allergies

For people with cat allergies, finding a feline companion can be challenging. However, some cat breeds are known to be more suitable for allergy sufferers due to lower levels of allergenic proteins, such as Fel d 1, or due to their unique coat types. While no breed is entirely hypoallergenic, several breeds are often recommended for those with mild to moderate allergies.

The Siberian cat, for example, is a popular choice because it produces fewer Fel d 1 proteins compared to other breeds. Many allergy sufferers find they can live comfortably with a Siberian cat, although individual reactions can vary. Another option is the Balinese, often called the “long-haired Siamese.” Despite their luxurious coats, Balinese cats produce less of the allergenic protein, making them a good match for allergy-sensitive individuals. The Cornish Rex and Devon Rex are also excellent choices, with their short, curly coats that shed less, reducing the spread of allergens. Additionally, the Sphynx, a hairless breed, is favored by some because it doesn’t shed fur, though regular grooming is required to remove oils from their skin, which can also carry allergens.
