Pet Water Needs

Every pet has specific water needs, and these can vary depending on their size, breed, and the type of environment they’re in. When traveling, keeping track of your pet’s water intake is essential to prevent dehydration.

Dogs, for example, require around one ounce of water per pound of body weight daily, though this can increase with activity or warmer weather. Cats, being more independent, often require encouragement to drink more water, particularly when traveling. Offering wet food alongside water can help increase their intake.

Smaller pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, or rabbits also have high hydration needs, especially during long trips. It’s important to use water bottles that are suited to their size and check them regularly during travel to ensure they are working properly.

Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, which include dry gums, sunken eyes, and lethargy. Always ensure that fresh, cool water is available, and make frequent stops to offer water during car trips or check water levels when traveling by air.
