Tropical Rodents

Tropical rodents are a diverse group of small mammals that play a crucial role in the ecosystems of tropical regions around the world. These rodents, which include species like agoutis, capybaras, pacas, and spiny rats, are found in a variety of habitats, from dense rainforests to savannas and wetlands. They are essential to the health of these ecosystems due to their roles in seed dispersal, soil aeration, and serving as prey for larger predators.

Agoutis, for example, are known for their ability to crack open hard nuts and seeds, which they often bury as a food reserve. This behavior inadvertently aids in the dispersal of seeds, allowing new plants to grow and contributing to forest regeneration. Capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, are semi-aquatic and are often found near rivers and lakes.
